Sports Betting Ring Mafia Connected

2006-03-02 10:41:00
Defense lawyer denies the mafia involvement in the New Jersey sports betting ring.

The sports betting ring allegedly co-operated by Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet is not connected to the mafia, a defense lawyer claimed on Tuesday. State officials are now investigating the involvement of the Bruno-Scarfo crime family in the gambling ring.

Charles A. Peruto Jr., the lawyer for James Ulmer, one of the suspects for operating the sports betting ring who is charged with promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy, denies his client connection to organized crime.

According to New Jersey State Police Capt. Al Della Fave, they have strong evidence regarding this investigation. State police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said the mob is involved in this sports betting ring, like in many other illegal gambling operations. No organized crime-related charges have been filed yet.
