Supporters of legalizing slots say that gambling revenues will help local communities.
Slots Can Help Local Communities
Supporters of legalizing slots gathered in a public meeting to convince the public of the advantages of legalizing slot machines at state racetracks. They said that slots revenues will help local communities if they were legalized. They said that today gambling revenues which are estimated in 1 billion dollars go to neighboring states where gambling is legal.
If slots were legalized cities could see their income increase a lot. Worcester would obtain an extra 6.1 million dollars, Lynn 2.9 million dollars, Brockton 3.5 million dollars, and Revere 1.2 million dollars.
According to supporters, this will help local schools. In Worcester the average class size is 30 students, which is too much. Besides, schools are too old and need to be repaired, and teachers have not got enough supplies. The City Councilor said, Mr Toomey, said that this year more than 11 million dollars will have to be cut from the budget. Worcester’s financial problems not only affect schools but also property taxes, pensions and health care costs.
Although the bill passed the Senate it is uncertain yet when the House vote will take place.
